MICK RONSON CRY BABY

Art Direction • Design • Illustration

Mick Ronson is best known for his genre defining guitar work, arrangements, and vocal contributions as a central member of David Bowie’s Spiders from Mars band. His influence is especially notable on several of Bowie’s landmark albums from the 1970s.

The design of the Mick Ronson Cry Baby pays tribute to iconic moments from Mick’s musical legacy. The blue and red color palette echoes the lightning bolt makeup from Bowie's Aladdin Sane, while the white and gold package design nods to Ronson’s flamboyant glam rock stage outfits from the 1972 Ziggy Stardust tour.

Bauhaus, a favorite typeface in 1970s rock imagery and pop culture, serves as the foundational forms for the illustration that adorns the effect pedal and its soft-touch wrapped box. The typeface is contrasted with a modern, embellished concentric frame that references the Art Deco poster styles of the 1920s—an art movement that emerged concurrently to Bauhaus.
